A Couple Tree Problems

Other problems I’ve encountered lately deal with trees.

One problem has to do with applying tree wound paint over recent cuts.  This is a “no-no”.  Although it sounds reasonable and may make your tree cosmetically attractive, it doesn’t help the tree.  In fact it encourages decay by trapping moisture beneath the sealer.  So if you’ve been doing this, please stop this practice.

A second problem I’ve seen is homeowners putting several inches of mulch around the base of their trees.  This too is not recommended.  When placed around the base of plants, mulch can hold water, which in turn can cause root rot.  It’s best to keep mulch at least 6” away from the tree trunk (and for shrubs 2-3”).
